Farm Values

Restore Balance

Every decision made on the farm prioritizes restoring and caring for our soils and surrounding ecosystem first.

We are trying to farm in a way that is in harmony with nature.

Compost supports soil microbiology, helping us grow healthy plants without the addition of harsh herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.

We only use ecological methods like applying compost, cover crops, organic fertilizer, and minerals to feed the soil that in turn feeds the plants.

Conserve Water

Conserve water for the precious resource it is in the southwest high-desert climate.

Capture and keep it in the soil, using techniques to concentrate a slow release of water, and selecting plants with low water needs, that are native and draught tolerant.

Utilizing keyline design and plowing based on a set of principles and techniques that works with the natural land contour patterns to restore and increase the depth and fertility of the soil, while increasing its water holding capacity.

Build Soil

Healthy living soil is the base for everything else. We build soil using cover crops and waste from the farm to create organic, biological compost which acts as a natural fertilizer that improves water usage, reduces erosion, and supports healthier crops.

Keep the soil covered, keep a living root in the ground year-round, this also helps keep the soil biology happy, moisture in the ground and reduces erosion.

No chemical fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or pesticides are ever used.

Reduce Waste

Work to build a regenerative loop, where waste in one area of the farm produces feed, fuel, ingredients, or nutrients for another.

Minimize packaging materials, choose paper over plastic, natural non-toxic dyes and inks, utilize recycled materials that are biodegradable.

We also work with local sources to divert waste (plant, tree trimmings, leaves, wood chips, compost materials, coffee grinds, etc.), that would otherwise be dumped or burned.

Compost, recycle, reduce, reuse.

Understanding Pocket Gophers: Balancing Biodiversity and Land Stewardship

Pocket gophers, while often seen as pests, play an essential role in promoting biodiversity by aerating soil, enriching nutrients, dispersing seeds, and creating habitats for other species. Their tunnels also support local predators by providing a food source. However, when their activity disrupts farming or landscaping, humane management strategies can help restore balance. These include installing barriers, encouraging natural predators, planting gopher-repelling species, using live traps, and reducing attractants. By coexisting with these industrious rodents where possible, we can protect both our land and the ecosystems they help sustain.

Farmer & Maker

Kate is a farmer and maker, with a passion for plants, photography, traveling, cooking, foraging, and woodworking. I feel grateful and honored to grow and work with the magical plants and trees in our area. I’m listening to the land and sky every day and following the moon and stars at night. I’m a student learning how to care for the land, plants, insects, and wild animals. I believe that farming can help mother nature heal our land while supporting our food security and health. I hope you too are inspired to grow and create.
